From a botanical point of view, the fruit of hemp, the hemp seed, is a nut (nutlet) which is surrounded by a thin, transparent shell. The nutrient-rich seeds are brown to black-grey, sometimes also green-grey in colour. Hemp seeds have a diameter of about 2.5 to 4 mm and a thousand grain weight of 15–20 g.
