Hemp - The edible raw material.
 |
From a botanical perspective, the hemp seed is classified as a nut. This assures easy handling in developing new recipes and warrants simplicity in both manual and industrial processing. Possessing a fine nutty taste, hemp seed is a high quality product which is nutritionally and physiologically beneficial. It can be added to, and processed with all kind of different foods. |

Hemp - A biological raw material with potential
If we would utilize a fifth of the uncultivated fields in Europe for growing hemp, the harvest after 100 days, would represent an energy potential approximately equivalent to 20 million tons of oil. This source of energy, in comparison to diesel or heating oil, would not disturb the CO² balance of the atmosphere! Additionally, this scenario produces:
- 36 million tons of hemp hurds as high quality animal feed.
- Approximately 4.8 million tons of hemp fiber.
- 6 million tons of hemp core for the production of e.g. tree-free paper. This is environmentally friendly and bio-degradable.
The hemp plant's potential is being rediscovered for industrial purposes. Car manufacturers such as Opel, and DaimlerChrysler, use hemp as a raw material in their production process. Regardless, if as door lining in the Mercedes S-Class or, for hat racks in the Opel Astra, or even for steering wheels or dashboards, hemp is versatile. The food industry takes advantage of hemp's high nutritional value. The cosmetic industry profits from hemp oil. Hemp paper is ecologically friendlier and more durable than paper out of wood pulp. Hemp fibre is an excellent ecologically based insulation material and it's experiencing a renaissance in the construction industry.
